Video: Santorum on the most important election since 1860

I believe one reason why Rick Santorum surprised the so-called political experts is that the former Pennsylvania senator is able, like Ronald Reagan, to wrap seemingly mundane issues into larger ones, such as the American spirit.

In this clip, from his Friday night speech in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Santorum begins with, "This is an election about big things."

Santorum brought up the Gipper's concerns that he expressed in his farewell address, regarding the different view of America being taught in schools at the time--as opposed to the version taught prior to the 1960s--one that was not about the greatness of this nation and the opportunities it offers. Remember, Reagan's farewell address was given in 1989--the situation in our schools regarding patriotism has only gotten worse since then.

"This is the most important election, I think, since the election of 1860," Santorum said with resoluteness.

After he described the setting when the Declaration of Independence was signed, he declared, "The job of creating freedom is hard, the job of maintaining freedom is equally as hard."

"Generations come and go and most don't have great tasks to perform, or [encounter] critical times and junctions of our country's history."

This was the most powerful part of Santorum's Friday night address.
