Pokeweed in Morton Grove

Pokeweed, an eight-foot giant, is viewed as a weed by some, but this native perennial produces dark-blue berries that are an important food source for songbirds.

On the upper right is a cluster of pokeweed blossoms, below that photograph are the berries--which are not yet ripe.

The plant was photographed in Morton Grove's Linne Woods on Sunday.
