On this day: Linnaeus publishes major work; Morton Grove trillium

On this day in 1753, Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus published his Species Plantarum, a key development of the classification of plants--giving them binomial names.

After his enoblemement by the Swedish King, the scientist went by the name Carl von Linné.

A couple of hours ago I ran--yes, I'm running again--through Linne Woods in Morton Grove and spotted some white trillium. The petals and leaves, as I've remarked before, come in threes. The plant was named by Linnaeus, and the aforementioned woods are named for him.

Tomorrow: Red trillium
