Mayapples, also known as the umbrella plant, are currently plentiful in the forest preserves of Morton Grove. They grow in clusters, the umbrella nature of mayapples tends to crowd out other vegetation.
Its blossoms eventually becomes a small fruit--the apple--but not until midsummer. The fruit is toxic, but can be consumed in small quantities.
Although fairly common in eastern North America, it's the only member of its genus to in the western hemisphere. Its three relatives are native to Asia.
