Mainline Protestant churches fawning over Occupy Chicago

Sece, Latvia's Lutheran Church--
no longer a warehouse
When the US Constitution was ratified, I believe the Episcopal Church was the new nation's largest denomination. A couple of days ago, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported that the church has reached a "grim milestone," its membership has dropped below 2 million.

A variety of reasons are given for this decades-long plummet in membership, including the low-birth rate of its adherents, but I'm of the opinion that its decision to hitch its wagon with the so-called social justice movement--rather than spreading the Good News of Jesus and saving souls--is the principal catalyst in its contraction.

Here is its latest liberal lunge: Grace Episcopal Church in Chicago's South Loop is hosting "teach-ins" for Occupy Chicago. Some of the Occupy Chicago protesters sleep in the church.

"They really believe in the American system."
"They really believe in the American system," Ted Curtis, the pastor at Grace told the Chicago Tribune. "They feel that the system is messed up. It's broken, it's off track and it needs to get back on. That's why, theologically, I said, 'Sure, come on in.'"

While Curtis may hold out hope for conversions, he's theologically blind if he hasn't noticed that the core of Occupy Chicago is hard-left and includes communists. Marxists are no friends to religion.

Perhaps I'm being too hard on the Episcopalians. What is my wife's faith, the Lutheran Church, up to? Again, from the Tribune: "The more the corporations focus on the wealthy, the more they worship the god of wealth, the more they're sacrificing the 99 percent," a South Side Lutheran minister said. Wow, he just slips into the Occupy mode like a comfortable pair of slippers. Lutheran churches in the United States are suffering from declining membership too.

The Soviets turned the Lutheran church in my wife's hometown of Sece, Latvia into a warehouse. Now that Latvia is free, it's a house of worship again.
