Yes, the office of Chicago's 33rd Ward belongs to the people. But things are always different--and worse--in Chicago. Longtime alderman Dick Mell (33rd), the estranged father-in-law of Rod Blagojevich, announced that he is resigning his seat. And of all the 55,000 residents of the ward, Mayor Rahm Emanuel
chose Deb Mell to replace him. Daughter follows dad.
Rahm's predecessor, Richard M. Daley, after Ald. Lemuel Austin died, the mayor appointed his widow to his seat. After Bill Beavers resigned his 7th Ward post, Daley named his daughter to the City Council.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
