Laura Bush headed to Hodgenville, Kentucky tomorrow

A typical "nation's mid-section" mess of rain, ice, and snow forced cancellation of the kick-off of the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial celebration on February 12.

Lincoln was born in a log cabin on that date in 1809 near Hodgenville, Kentucky.

The bicentennial observances will last two years.

Hey, it's Lincoln. He deserves it.

First Lady Laura Bush was to be the featured speaker at February 12 event. On Tuesday she will finally travel to Hodgenville, but this event is closed to the public. Mrs. Bush will participate in a Junior Ranger activity, and speak to students at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.

Sure hope Laura Bush has a good time. Any data on how Illinois
was named the Land of Lincoln?

Wasn't he a senator in Illinois before he became president? The state plates read Land of Lincoln.
I must say I'm truly stumped.
Historians would no doubt call
that idiocy.

There's so much idiocy in Illinois.

But the "Land of Lincoln" ia an honest nickname. Lincoln, except when he served in Washington, first in the House, then as president, lived his entire adult life in Illinois.

He ran for the Senate (see related post) against Stephen A. Douglas, the Senate's preeminent Democrat in 1858. Douglas won, but Lincoln beat him two years later for the presidency.

Lincoln was also against slavery as well.

Have anything on Ulysses S Grant?

How close is Hodgenville to the
Illinois Kentucky border? It could
be a great distance.

Grant...I will...I'm reading his memoirs now.

The fastest way to get to Hodgenville from Chicago is to take I-65 thru Indiana. It's about forty miles south of Louisville.
