Early on in the novel Bonfire of the Vanities, a protester led by an Al Sharpton-type hustler throws a half-empty bottle of mayonnaise at the mayor of New York during a public hearing. The mayor then muses about the type of person who brings a bottle of mayonnaise to such an event.
Surely there is a Chicago police officer who is wondering why on earth someone would bring a frying pan to an Occupy protest. One playful leftist was arrested for assaulting a cop with one. Okay, maybe the Chicago Tribune is right, the pan--and pots--were brought for noisemaking purposes, but with the Occupy movement, you never know what is on their minds...
