I've been fortunate enough to travel a lot lately. Last month I was in Denver for FreedomWorks' BlogCon 2011.
What is now Denver began in the 1850s at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. This section of the city is known as "LoDo," short for lower downtown.
To alleviate flooding, the Army Corps of Engineers erected a dam outside of Denver that created Cherry Creek Lake. Other flood control measures must have include straightening the creek in Denver, because in LoDo, it runs so straight it looks more like a canal.
There are several truss bridges such as the one pictured in this part of the city.
