Illinois just raised its personal income tax by 67 percent. What are other states doing? In Michigan, the Detroit Free Press says "painful budget cuts" are coming. Kansas' new governor, Sam Brownback, is proposing a budget that cuts spending by 6 percent--not even schools are exempt. In Iowa, new governor Terry Branstad is calling for "shared sacrifice."
In New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie wants to eliminate teacher tenure, which is something Florida's new governor, Rick Scott also wants to do.
Each state has a new Republican governor.
Illinois plans to increase spending.
But even Democrats are getting into the austerity mode, such as California's Jerry Brown and New York's Andrew Cuomo.
Illinois just has to be different.
