Voters on Chicago's Southwest Side have a choice this fall. To send the state's most powerful Democrat, state House Speaker Michael Madigan back to Springfield, or to give "Republican" Patrick John Ryan the honor.
But Ryan is almost without a doubt a straw candidate put on the ballot by Madigan's powerful ward organization.
Not criminal, but this contest can hardly be called a free election. Illinois GOP chairman vows to have a real challenger to Ryan in two years.
