AFL-CIO prez wants to sneak EFCA into law

"Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency."
Barack Obama, January 21, 2009.

In the Washington Examiner, Mark Hemingway writes that big labor spent $400 million to elect Democrats in 2008. That's dues-money, by the way. They feel they're owed, so they are pushing for the Orwellian-monikered Employee Free Choice Act to become law, which will, among other things, take away a worker's right to a secret ballot election when asked to join a union.

Instead, a union goon, perhaps your supervisor, could ask you to sign right there. "Don't worry," you'll be told, "it's free choice."

"Just sign."

EFCA is toxic, which is why the unions and their Democratic enablers might try to sneak it through.

Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, prefers the sneaky approach.

One victory that has eluded the AFL-CIO so far is seeing the Employee Free Choice Act signed into law. Unions have struggled to find the 60 votes in the Senate to move the standalone bill, and discussions have moved to attaching it to another piece of legislation.

"Anything we can get it attached to. There are multitudes of things we can get it attached to, and we will. We will get it done and it will be a good thing for the country," Trumka said. "Quite frankly, I don't know when we ever had 60 votes."
Sneaky. And not transparent.
