Lincoln's New Salem
About 20 miles north of Springfield is Lincoln's New Salem.
New Salem was where Abraham Lincoln first lived on his own.
Last week, Little Marathon Pundit and I visited the Lincoln sites in the Springfield area. On a rainy Thursday, the two of us visited the recreated village.
New Salem was a town from 1829 until it's abandonment in 1840. Lincoln lived there from 1831-1837.
Just north of the New Salem site is the village of Petersburg. For a short time, the future president was a land surveyor, and Lincoln surveyed the land where Petersburg now sits.
If you're planning a visit to Springfield to see the new Lincoln museum--which is well worth visiting despite the tone of my posts from Sunday--take time to visit New Salem, so you can get a fuller appreciation of the life of the 16th president.
