Johnny Cash and Joni Mitchell: Girl from the North Country

Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell were among the guests on the first episode The Johnny Cash Show in 1969--Cash and Dylan performed the latter's Girl From The North Country," as they did on his Nashville Skyline, which was released a couple of months earlier.

That song appears on 1962's The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, his first great work.

The lyrics are perfect for January:

If you're traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was the true love of mine.

If you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see if she's a coat so warm
To keep her from the howlin' winds.
Joni Mitchell's formative years were spent in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which is even colder than Minnesota. Watch a later Mitchell appearance on Cash's TV show, as she joins the Man in Black and sings "Girl from the North Country." Throw a log on the fire, lean back, and enjoy.
