This video, Johnny Cash's cover of the Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt," is so powerful that is should have one an Academy Award--despite the fact it was never released in theaters. Why let rules get in the way?
The song is from The Man in Black's American IV: The Man Comes Around, his final album of new material to be released during his lifetime.
As one approaches death, it's natural to look back at the setbacks. But in Cash's case, as it should be with all of us, the successes outweighed the failures.
About half way into the video, Cash visits his Dyess, Arkansas boyhood home, and I had the honor of doing the same in 2007, as you'll read below.
Tomorrow would have been Cash's 78th birthday; the central point of the celebration will is this week's release of American VI: Ain't No Grave, the final American Recordings album.
Meanwhile, an internet movement has sprung to wear black on Friday. I'll be part of that group.
