I could have entitled this post, "A Gem from Johnny Cash's Lost Period." After the cancellation of his ABC variety show in 1971, Cash indeed entered a lost period. He recorded and toured on a regular basis, but he enjoyed few critical or commercial successes until his first Rick Rubin-produced album was released in 1994.
When The Man in Black recorded Nick Lowe's "Without Love" for his Rockabilly Blues in 1980, the "Basher" was married to Carlene Carter, Cash's stepdaughter.
This song sounds like it was cut in Sam Phillips' Sun Records studio in 1956.
