Star Trek's Uhura, Nichelle Nichols, dies at 89

Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura on the original Star Trek series and six movies, died today according to her son.

When I was a convention service manager at the Congress Hotel in Chicago, we hosted many Star Trek conventions. I met Nichols at one of them. She was born in Robbins, Illinois, just a few miles from Palos Heights, where I grew up. We talked about Chicago, the southwest suburbs, and more. Nichols couldn't have been any nicer. She was a real class act.

Rest in peace.

Eric Clapton: Stand and Deliver

Last Thursday on Fox News' Gutfeld, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison got shout-outs from the host for being unlikely rebels, considering both musical legends are in the mid-70s.

The current young generation is simply a bunch of wimps.

Here's Clapton from last year singing a Morrison-penned anti-COVID lockdown song, "Stand and Deliver."

This is a lyrical segment of note:
Magna Carta, Bill of Rights
The constitution, what's it worth?
You know they're gonna grind us down, ah
Until it really hurts.
Is this a sovereign nation
Or just a police state?
You better look out people
Before it gets too late

The phrase "stand and deliver" was, or as legend has it, the British version of America's "stick 'em up," the warning from robbers to get ready to be robbed of your valuables. "Highwaymen" plagued the UK countryside in the 18th century, one of the most notorious of them was Dick Turpin.

Here's the last line from the song, "Dick Turpin wore a mask too."

With the WHO and local and national governmental bodies exaggerating the monkey pox outbreak, we need to be worried.

Again.

The Cliffdivers (Cover Nick Lowe - Marie Provost ) live @ Royal Bondi Sydney

A band I haven't heard of, the Cliffdivers, perform here Nick Lowe's "Marie Provost." Lowe got a few things wrong on this otherwise remarkable tune. Marie Prevost, not Provost, was one of those silent movie stars whose career didn't survive the industry's transition to talkies.

An alcoholic, she died nearly broke and alone in a hotel room in Hollywood, not on July 29 as Lowe wrote--yes, that is today's date--but on January 21, 1937.

Enjoy all the song written by "the Basher" all the same!

The Biden recession: US economy falls 0.9 percent in second quarter

The Democrats and the Biden administration can't define what a woman is. Now they are trying to re-define what constitutes a recession.

For a second straight quarter the United States economy shrank, this time by 0.9 percent. For decades a recession has been defined as declining GDP for two straight quarters.

Joe Biden inherited an economy recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. And by printing money and declaring war on energy, Biden ruined it.

This is news to think about when you vote in November.

The View hosts apologize for smearing Turning Point USA with Nazis

The View apologized this morning for very misleading reporting on "Nazis" at a Turning Point USA conference last weekend in Florida.

Like the Jussie Smollett hoax, here was a story that was too good for some dishonest journalists to pass up.

Nazis! At a conservative event! What a boffo story!

But this morning one the hosts for the ABC show was forced to issue a correction after Turning Point USA's lawyers issued a cease-and-desist letter. "We wanna make clear that these demonstrators were gathered outside the event and that they were not invited or endorsed by Turning Point USA."

The View, or its staff, didn't do its job of--wait for it--by investigating the story before airing it. As the old saying goes in the honest days of journalism, "If your mother says she loves you--check it out."

In my opinion, and Dan Bongino brought this up in his podcast Monday, the Nazi "protest" at the Turning Point event, what occurred in Florida seems eerily similar to the attempt to recreate the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last year as Republican gubernatorial candidate, Glenn Youngkin, campaigned there last fall. The Lincoln Project, an anti-Donald Trump group, later claimed responsibility for the stunt.

Four fatally shot over weekend in Chicago, another stabbed to death, and at least 57 wounded

Chicago's Summer of Joy was anything but that this weekend as four people were shot to death, another was fatally stabbed, and at least 57 others were wounded by gunfire.

Of the deadly shootings, a 16-year-old boy was killed Sunday evening in Woodlawn. Also on the South Side on Sunday, in West Englewood, a man was killed in a domestic dispute. A few minutes, a man was shot to death while, get this, changing a tire at Homan Square on the West Side. The weekend's first fatal shooting happened early Saturday morning when a man was slain at a party.

And a few hours ago a man was stabbed to death during an argument while riding a train on the CTA's Red Line at Englewood.

There have been at least 57 people wounded by gunfire over this past weekend in Chicago.

Ray Charles - Bein' Green (1991)

The song "Bein' Green," sung by Jim Henson by way of Kermit the Frog, has been covered by an amazing array of artists, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and at a period in his career when he was recording few covers, Van Morrison.

In honor of the failures of the green energy movement, in the words of Kermit and more, "It's not easy being green," here's Ray Charles in 1991 taking his turn on this song.

Gutfeld: They cancelled Dave Chappelle

Greg Gutfeld's opening monologue from Thursday night--and I don't say this a lot--is essential viewing if you have an open mind. Well, since you are reading this blog, you do. The risk takers in the entertainment world are the middle aged one and the old.

People like Dave Chappelle, John Cleese, and J.K. Rowling. They are fighting back against the woke cancel culture.

While not getting into details, Gutfeld gives a shoutout to Eric Clapton and Van Morrison--both of whom are nearing 80--who have repeatedly spoken out against the COVID-19 lockdowns.

As Morrison sang last year in "The Rebels":
Where have all the rebels gone?
Hiding behind their computer screens
Where's the spirit, where is the soul?

Hey millennials, Van the Man is talking to you!

As for Gutfeld, his show, mostly likely working with a much smaller budget, regularly beats ABC's Jimmy Kimmell Live and the Tonight Show ratings-wise each night. He's funnier too than those wokesters.

Only Stephen Colbert remains in Gutfeld's way.

Six people held in Chicago train stabbing attack

The victim was smart enough to be carrying a knife too.

From ABC Chicago
Six people are in custody after a stabbing attack on board a CTA Red Line train on the North Side Friday morning, Chicago police said.

Chicago police said at about 2:03 a.m., a 42-year-old man got off a train at the North/Clybourn station and switched to another train car. A group of six suspects followed him onto the train, demanded his belongings and attacked him with a knife and broken glass bottle, police said.

The victim also took out a knife, police said. The victim had several stab wounds and was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, police said.
Three of the alleged perpetrators have been hospitalized, all six are in police custody.

This is all part of the "Summer of Joy" Mayor Lori Lightfoot promised.

Bidenflation: Inflation rate at 9.1 percent, a new 40 year high

If he's honest--and that's a reach--Biden will blame himself.

From CNBC:

Shoppers paid sharply higher prices for a variety of goods in June as inflation kept its hold on a slowing U.S. economy, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.
The consumer price index, a broad measure of everyday goods and services, soared 9.1% from a year ago, above the 8.8% Dow Jones estimate. That marked another month of the fastest pace for inflation going back to December 1981.
Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core CPI increased 5.9%, compared to the 5.7% estimate.
On a monthly basis, headline CPI rose 1.3% and core CPI was up 0.7%, compared to respective estimates of 1.1% and 0.5%.

Jill Biden under fire for 'breakfast tacos' comment

What's almost as bad is that Jill Biden spoke at a conference with "Latinx" in its name. I know a lot of Hispanics--not one of them use that term, they prefer Latino or Latina for the most part. Many hate it, the rest snicker at "Latinx."

The Democrats are badly out of touch. Oh, yesterday at that "Latinx" soiree in San Antonio, Jill Biden said this in what were supposed to be compliments regarding Raul Yzaguirre, the former head of the far-left group La Raza, that he "helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bogedas [sic] of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength."

People don't like being compared to food. Hispanics are understandably upset about Jill's remarks. She had since apologized.

Oh, Dr. Biden, who calls herself that because she has an education doctorate, mispronounced "bodega."

La Raza is now called UnidosUS.

Man pleads with leftist protesters blocking traffic so he can make it to work and avoid prison

3 dead and 7 wounded in Gary, Indiana mass shooting at block party

Abandoned Gary building in 2017
There was a mass shooting early Tuesday morning in Gary, Indiana, the fourth mass shooting in the Chicago area since Friday. Most prominent of that bloodshed of course is the Highland Park shootings north of the city that killed six and wounded 31 others.

From CBS Chicago:

Three people are dead, and seven others are wounded in a mass shooting at a block party in Gary Tuesday just after midnight.
Gary Police said officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Missouri Street around 12:46 a.m. for several people with gunshot wounds.
Upon arrival, officers discovered three people unresponsive and seven others with gunshot wounds, police said.
Marquise Hall, 26, from Lafayette, Indiana, Ashanti Brown, 20, from Olympia Fields, Illinois, and Laurance Magnum, 25, from Merrillville, Indiana were all pronounced dead on the scene by the Lake County Coroners Office.

Eight people killed and at least 63 others wounded over holiday weekend in Chicago

Over the long Independence Day weekend in Chicago, the relative midpoint of what Mayor Lori Lightfoot as a "Summer of Joy," eight people were shot to death and at least 63 others were wounded

While the deadly mass shooting yesterday in north suburban Highland Park understandably dominated the national news, there were two mass shootings in Chicago over the weekend. Four people were wounded in mass shooting Friday night in West Garfield Park and five others were early Monday in Parkway Gardens.

Good news? Well, last year was worse in Chicago, when 19 people were killed and over 100 others wounded.

Highland Park mass shooter arrested

Yesterday, just 14 miles from where I live, Robert "Bobby" E. Crimo III, was arrested after committing a mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois during that city's annual July 4th parade.

Six people were killed and 31 others were wounded. Crimo, 22, is expected to be charged today.

White House sparks backlash after saying high gas prices guard "liberal world order"

Brian Deese, an economic advisor to Joe Biden, is an out-of-touch elitist who betrayed his true sentitments on Thursday.

"What do you say to those families that say," CNN's Victor Blackwell asked Deese, "'listen, we can't afford to pay $4.85 a gallon for months, if not years?'"

Oh, where I live, in Crook County, Illinois, regular gasoline is $1-a-gallon more!

Deese's reply was, "This is about the future of the Liberal World Order and we have to stand firm."

He easily could have said called Americans hayseeds and rubes.
