An alcoholic, she died nearly broke and alone in a hotel room in Hollywood, not on July 29 as Lowe wrote--yes, that is today's date--but on January 21, 1937.

The Cliffdivers (Cover Nick Lowe - Marie Provost ) live @ Royal Bondi Sydney
A band I haven't heard of, the Cliffdivers, perform here Nick Lowe's "Marie Provost."
Lowe got a few things wrong on this otherwise remarkable tune. Marie Prevost, not Provost, was one of those silent movie stars whose career didn't survive the industry's transition to talkies.
