On this day in 1916: Battle of Verdun ends

The overall theme of World War I is senseless killing and maiming over a few square miles of mud. Such was the case with the ten month-long Battle of Verdun between France and Germany. Casualty totals vary but 600,000 or so seems to be a generally agreed upon figure.

Tragic and senseless.
