Sadly, the tentacles of corruption in Illinois reaches into its largest police department. From
the Chicago Tribune:
A veteran Chicago police officer sighed heavily and wept as he pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring with leaders of the Latin Kings to rob the gang's rivals of cash, drugs and guns, often while on duty.
Alex Guerrero, 42, did not look at his family sitting in the nearly empty gallery in a federal courtroom in Hammond [Indiana]. He didn't see it when his sister whispered, "We love you." He kept his head down, rubbed his eyes, looked at the ceiling.
A 15-year veteran tactical officer from Chicago's Southeast Side, Guerrero pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy, drug conspiracy and using threats or violence. He was suspended without pay after his arrest in November. He has been in custody since then.
Guerrero faces a sentence of 19 years in prison in exchange for his guilty plea and likely testimony at the upcoming trial of several Latin Kings leaders. He would have faced mandatory life in prison if convicted at trial.
