Chicago fed prosecutor Fitzgerald quitting

Longtime US Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Patrick Fitzgerald, announced that he is stepping down at the end of June. Fitzgerald's office prosecuted former governors George Ryan, Rod Blagojevich, as well as Blago and Barack Obama crony Tony Rezko. All three of them are in prison now.

Nationally he is perhaps better known as the special prosecutor in the Valerie Plame leak case.

Fitzgerald was a George W. Bush appointee. Then-US Senator Peter Fitzgerald (no relation), over the objection of his fellow Illinois Republicans, suggested the New York native for this post. Peter paid a price for this and other independent actions--the state GOP abandoned him and he did not run for reelection in 2004. Obama was elected to the open seat that fall.

Republican leadership: You get the results you deserve in the Land of Lincoln.
