Sen. Sessions on Sunday talk show about Tea Party, 'I like them, I think they are saving this country'; talks about spending cuts

The battle of the 2010 budget is over, but the war against excessive federal spending continues.

Last week on ABC's This Week with Christiane Amanpour, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), debated his Democratic colleague, Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York. This morning they squared off again on CBS' Face the Nation.

Of Obama's proposed 2012 budget, Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, called it "the most irresponsible budget ever submitted to the American people." He added, "We are spending money we do not have." Sessions credits the Tea Party for the pushback against the spending orgy. Of the Tea Party, Sessions declared, "I like them, I think they are saving this country."

This afternoon Sesssion appeared on Fox News. He rattled off Obama's original budget suggestion, which included steep increases in spending for the State, Energy, and Transportation departments--a whopping 60 percent for the latter, high speed rail has a lot to do with that.

Sessions also had this to say:

I think [President Obama] needs more than to just give a speech. I think he's going to need to submit a new budget that shows how the numbers add up… He's now basically in retreat, he's making a speech about how he plans to change, and I hope it's sincere, but he resisted just a few days ago almost any cuts in spending.
