On the Baltic Sea: Saulkrasti dunes

In the early 19th century, noblemen built summer cottages in what is now Saulkrasti, Latvia. The Baltic Sea, the stately pines, and the majestic dunes have much to offer visitors during the warm weather months, but as you can see winter also presents its own charms.

I've been to Saulkrasti twice, the pines in the photograph dominate the dunes and are common in Latvia. While reading Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's August 1914, I wondered if the East Prussian pines he wrote about were the same trees found I enjoyed gazing at while walking along the beach in Saulkrasti.

The erstwhile German province is 200 miles south of Saulkrasti.

The photograph was taken last month by Mrs. Marathon Pundit.
