Illinois US Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias' has been varnishing his environmental credentials and pounding his chest over BP of late, but one of his top aides, Endy Zemenides, was lobbying for BP in 2007. That was when the oil giant was seeking approval, which it got, to dump higher-than-permitted amounts of mercury into Lake Michigan from its Whiting, Indiana refinery, just three miles from Chicago.
The BP emissions controversy was a major news story in Chicago when BP sought that exemption. And I remember encountering petition gatherers at North Avenue Beach when I stopped for water during my marathon training runs three summers ago.
