Kansas tops England again in annual Pancake Day race

According to legend every Shrove Tuesday since 1445 in Olney, England, women have raced with a skillet and a pancake. Over the years a 415 yard course was used, and in 1950, Liberal, Kansas began its own pancake race--using the same distance and course configuration.

A tradition was enhanced, and a rivalry was born. Liberal (that's the name of the town) won again yesterday. It prevailed last year and leads Olney 34-15. Middle school teacher Cheri Bevis completed the Kansas course in 63 seconds. Over in England, Olney's top finisher, Jane Hughes, finished at 67 seconds.

Women entrants in both races are clad in aprons and headscarves, and are required to flip a pancake at the start and the finish. Liberal has turned the event into a four day event.
