I've mentioned the 2004 Indiana US Senate race before. Republican Marvin Scott ran commercials in the expensive Chicago market so Northwest Indiana residents could hear Scott's message: That Hoosier Senator Evan Bayh says he is a moderate while in Indiana, but legislates as a liberal in Washington.
Scott's message is catching on in Indiana, according to Rasmussen. GOP Rep. Mike Pence leads Bayh, according to a telephone poll, 47 to 44 percent. In a theoretical match up against former Congressman John Hostettler, Bayh leads the Republican 44 percent to 41 percent. Hostettler was a victim of the 2006 Democratic rout.
Rasmussen notes that any time incumbents can't climb above 50 percent in such matchups, they are in trouble. Yes, incumbents do have advantages--name recognition for one--but 2010 is not shaping up to be a favorable year for Democratic officeholders.
UPDATE January 26: Red State is reporting that Pence will not run for the Senate.
