When the leader is away, it's a convenient time to make a move.
Roll Call (registration required) reports that during the upcoming Congressional spring break, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the AFL-CIO have already unleashed field staff several states, including Pennsylvania and Maine to push the Employee Free Choice Act, better known as "card check."
Last week Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) disclosed that he would not vote for "card check," which would take away workers' rights to a secret ballot to decide if they want to join a union and replace it with a free-to-peek petition drive.
Maine is represented by two moderate Republican senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. But unlike Specter, the Maine mods voted against card check when it came to the Senate floor for a cloture vote in 2007.
