DNAinfo Chicago silent on arrest of its former "radical leftist journalist" busted for Jewish center threats

Juan Thompson, described by Slate as a "radical leftist journalist," finds himself in a lot of trouble tonight--he's under arrest. Thompson used to write for St. Louis-based The Intercept and for DNAinfo Chicago.

Thompson allegedly made at least eight threats to Jewish centers, including the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) headquarters, in the last two months, according to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office. Authorities say it was part of his mission to frame and harass his ex-girlfriend after their relationship ended.

Thompson is accused of emailing the ADL in late February, saying the woman "is behind the bomb threats against jews." "She lives in nyc and is making more bomb threats tomorrow," the email said, according to a criminal complaint. The ADL then received a phone call the next day claiming a bomb was inside its Manhattan office.

The poltroons at DNAinfo Chicago have yet to report on its ex-reporter's arrest. Its lead story at 10:00pm CST is about a truck getting stuck under a Northwest Side viaduct.

It's sickening how some so-called journalistic outlets ignore controversies involving themselves. Thompson's arrest is a national news story, unlike the the viaduct inconvenience. There is news, fake news, and with DNAinfo Chicago, no news.

At least The Intercept has the fortitude to inform its readers about its former reporter's arrest.

We were horrified to learn this morning that Juan Thompson, a former employee of The Intercept, has been arrested in connection with bomb threats against the ADL and multiple Jewish Community Centers in addition to cyberstalking. These actions are heinous and should be fully investigated and prosecuted. We have no information about the charges against Thompson other than what is included in the criminal complaint. Thompson worked for The Intercept from November 2014 to January 2016, when he was fired after we discovered that he had fabricated sources and quotes in his articles.

#Chiraq: Business owners compelled to hire private security guards

Business owners in East Lakeview on Chicago's North Side pay taxes for police protection. Now they have to pay out of their own pockets for security guard surveillance because Chicago is failing to do the job in its worst neighborhoods.

Residents and businesses in East Lakeview will soon be getting some help to combat crime.

Starting next week, private security guards will be on patrol, supplementing the presence of Chicago police. It’s a growing strategy in neighborhoods where officers are being diverted to more violent parts of the city.

Maureen Martino heads the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce, which starting next week will begin deploying private security officers to supplement Chicago police.

By May, as many as a dozen security officers at a time will be patrolling the streets of East Lakeview at night and about half as many during the day. They'll be wearing black reflector vests and some will carry guns.

Wrigley Field is the best known location in East Lakeview.

#TrumpSpring: Jobless claims lowest in over 40 years

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell to the lowest level in 44 years last week, more evidence of a healthy labor market.

Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs across the U.S., fell by 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 223,000 in the week ended Feb. 25, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 245,000 new claims last week. Claims for the week ended Feb. 18 were revised down to 242,000 from 244,000.

Data on unemployment applications can be volatile from week to week. A more stable measure, the four-week moving average, dropped by 6,250 last week to 234,250. That was the lowest level since April 1973.

Last autumn the Atlantic and the New York Post, following my prescient lead, made similar comparisons.

Today The Week, a leftist publication along the lines of Atlantic, posed this question: Is Trumpism the new punk rock?

Democrats think there are Russians under Trump staffers' beds

Just now in his weekly press conference, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI)  said that members of Congress meet with foreign ambassadors "all of the time." Ryan remarked that he just met with the Indian ambassador a few days ago.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions met twice last year with Sergey Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the United States, twice last year. During his Senate confirmation hearings, Sessions testified that he did not meet with any Russian envoys recently.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the head drama queen of the upper chamber, is calling for Sessions to resign. Why wasn't Chuckie this angry about the 35,000 State Department emails Hillary Clinton illegally deleted?

Sessions is a lawyer. He probably compartmentalized the Russian question into the context of visits to Russia or Donald Trump campaign events. That's how lawyers think.

This is a story that no one outside of the Beltway cares about at all.

If the Democrats want to return to power, they should fashion policies that a majority of Americans can get behind, instead of looking for Russians under the beds of members of the Trump administration.

UPDATE 7:45pm CST: Sessions this afternoon recused himself from any investigation of the Trump campaign and so-called Russian influences. I wish he hadn't and instead told the Democrats to "иди на фиг," that is, "kiss my ass." Perhaps next time.
