159th Street in Harvey |
More may be coming.
From WTTW Chicago:
This could just be the first shoe to drop. That's why the state is called ILL-inois.
The city of North Chicago is being penalized as well. And according to an analysis by Amanda Kass, a researcher at the University of Chicago, there are 74 police or fire pension funds in towns across the state that are as similarly underfunded as Harvey (you can download that list of funds here). In the Chicago area, they include Burbank, Evergreen Park, Maywood, Melrose Park and Niles – to name a few. The Civic Federation’s Laurence Msall says these towns could go the same route.
“If they ignore the law and don’t make the contribution as Harvey has, then yes, those municipalities all around the state have ability to seek an intercept of state revenues that would otherwise come to the municipality,” Msall said.
The complicating factor for Harvey is that it has had years of decline and corruption in government. Also, property taxes are very high and there is almost nowhere to go for revenue.
America, do we really want a blue wave in 2018? Isn't one Illinois enough?

please do us a favor and keep posting on this story as it develops...it is fascinating to me that state and federal govt oversight was not completed in this mess...the town is literally falling apart and the people there keep reelecting a criminal to run it? was he running unopposed? fascinating to me...and very sad.
Kevin, I flesh it out here: Harvey, Illinois’ layoffs to pay for pensions portends a nasty future for the rest of state
Thanks John...I stumbled onto this blog recently. I absolutely LOVE your urban explorations of abandoned buildings/cities and your knowledge of what they are and how they came to that condition. I stop in to Marathon Pundit daily now. I really have no connection at all to Illinois or Detroit, etc. Just fascinated by the topics you cover. You do an amazing job! I am a political independent, but lean conservative. I will never understand why people in Illinois keep electing the same corruption decade after decade, with things only getting worse and worse for them. It is amazing to me. Anyway, I hope you keep up the urban exploring and I also hope you stay safe while you do it. Best wishes and thanks for your work from a big fan!
