A former Teamster trustee who admitted to taking bribes for preventing union organization at a Detroit produce supplier was sentenced Friday to two years of supervised release and an $18,000 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.The grocer was fined $500,000.
Michael Townsend, a former business agent and trustee of Teamsters Local 337, pleaded guilty in December 2013 to taking prohibited payments as a labor union employee, according to court records.
Townsend, 69, of Dearborn Heights, admitted after a U.S. Labor Department investigation to taking quarterly payments of $1,500 from June 2005 to July 2008, "to preclude and prevent any attempts by the defendant to organize the employees of LaGrasso Brothers Produce," according to court documents.
