On Memorial Day, I'd like to take pause and remember three veterans who are buried near my home.
Benjamin J. Lenzen, 1896-1972, was a World War I Navy vet who later served as president of Morton Grove Post 134 of the American Legion. He's buried at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Skokie.
Earl Murley Dover, 1916-2012 was a captain in the United States Army Air Force who served in Europe in World War II. His grave is also at St. Paul's.
Michael Joseph "Joe" Arrigo, 1932-2012, was a sergeant in the Marines during the Korean War. He's buried across the street at St. Peter's United Church of Christ Cemetery. He was a longtime resident of nearby Glenview.
Thank you for your service, gentlemen.

Best always,

Sincerest salute to all of those troops. Their lives and sacrifice continue to be a reminder not only of to whom we owe our freedom to, but also how we can continue to uphold it. In my opinion, that is by giving our gatekeepers in the military a proper retirement package as soon as they pass their task onto a new breed.
