Occupy news: NATO 3 terrorism trial begins Tuesday

Another  hangover from the defunct Occupy Chicago movement is the NATO 3 terrorism trial, which starts Tuesday.

From the Chicago Tribune:
The so-called NATO 3 — Brian Church, 22, Jared Chase, 25, and Brent Betterly, 25 — were arrested after police raided the Bridgeport apartment where the out-of-state men were staying and seized four Molotov cocktails four days before world leaders met here to discuss security in Afghanistan and other issues.

The NATO 3 are facing trial together on 11 counts — including conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of explosives and attempted arson — and face up to 40 years in prison as jury selection begins Tuesday. Each has been held in lieu of $1.5 million bail since the arrests.

Prosecutors allege the three were involved in discussions or preparations for attacks on Chicago police stations, President Barack Obama's re-election headquarters, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's home and a Chase bank in the Loop.

Besides the explosives, police said they found a makeshift mortar made from a length of PVC pipe, handwritten instructions for making a pipe bomb, a compound bow, knives, a throwing star and a large painted plywood shield with the sharp ends of screws drilled through the front.
They may be occupying prison cells for a long time. If found guilty, look for "Release the NATO 3" banners at leftist rallies--alongside ones demanding authorities to "Free Mumia" and "Free Bradley Manning."
