American Crossroads has a big spender on its radar.
One of the 12 members of the congressional "super committee" set up to cut spending is Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat. But the embattled legislator--she faces a tough reelection next year--brought attention to herself by billing the federal government for commuting from St. Louis to Washington in a private jet--sticking it to the taxpayers for $76,000. The plane was co-owned by the senator and her husband. They announced their intentions to sell it after the media reported on her expensive traveling this spring. Oh, the McCaskills owed St. Louis County $287,273 in back taxes for the plane. That's been paid--but again only after that debt became public.
Back to American Crossroads: The tough-as-nails conservative group is running an ad campaign in Missouri about what many are calling "Claire Air." And it started a website in June called The Truth About Claire.
McCaskill is profligate with taxpayer money in other ways. For instance, she says the disastrous first stimulus bill was "wildly successful." Oh, did you know that the Kansas City Royals are having a "wildly successful" season?
Oh, isn't President Obama always whining about private jet owners?
