Washington Democrats' Scheme to Tax Mileage Will Hurt Virginia Families
Richmond, VA – George Allen issued the following statement on The Hill's report that the Obama Administration is floating a plan to tax Americans based on how many miles they drive.
In our struggling economy, the worst thing Washington can do is to raise taxes on middle class families and small businesses. Yet that is exactly what the latest scheme being floated by Washington Democrats calls for. Should we start taxing parents for taking their kids to school or soccer practice? Should we penalize the driver of the carpool who is taking neighbors and colleagues into work?
No, we should not.
But in their drive to fuel the unsustainable, excessive, wasteful spending that has made trillion dollar deficits the norm and increased our national debt to over $14 trillion, Washington would hurt those that can least afford it. This onerous, big brother proposal being floated by Washington Democrats is an attack on our civil liberties and increases taxes on the very families and small businesses hurting the most from rising gas, electricity, and food prices.
One of the great aspects of life in America is the freedom and independence to travel where and when they want. In the U.S. Senate I pledge to all Virginians that I will fight every proposal like this new tax scheme. I would hope my opponent Mr. Kaine will join me in repudiating the administration's latest proposal that would harm families and businesses across Virginia.
