When outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi assumed her office four years ago, she promised to "drain the swamp." She forgot about Charlie Rangel. Among the charges against the Harlem Democrat is that he didn't pay all of his taxes. Until last winter, Rangel was the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, which is in charge of taxes.
He was censured by the full House today--the first since my congressman at the time, Republican Dan Crane, along with Democrat Gerry Studds, were reprimaned for separate sex scandals in 1983.
Rangel will remain a member of Congress.
The vote to censure was 333-79.
