The Des Moines Register is bemoaning the diminished clout Iowa will suffer because it will almost certainly lose a congressional seat because of decennial reapportionment.
Because of its first-in-the-nation presidential caucus, Iowa is still able to wield considerable sway over national affairs. America's pursuit of that corn snake-oil, ethanol, is one expensive example. Presidential candidates who don't gargle ethanol do poorly there.
But now that Al Gore has sworn off the stuff, it will be interesting how the 2012 hopefuls handle the ethanol issue in the run-up to the caucuses.
