On May 4th, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR declared the restoration of its independence, asserting that the 1940 occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union was illegal.
It was not until the failed August coup by Soviet hardliners the following year that the rest of the world took this action, and similar moves by neighboring Estonia and Lithuania, seriously. The three Baltic states were handed over to the USSR by the Molotov-von Ribbentrop Pact of 1939.
Mrs. Marathon Pundit is a native of Latvia, she emigrated to the Land of the Free shortly before the coup.
Happy Anniversary!
