Unemployment at 9.7 percent for the third straight month

First the good news--the economy gained 162,000 last month. But the national unemployment rate is stuck at 9.7 percent--it's the third straight month unemployment has been at this level. Remember, in the rush to pass the $862 billion stimulus bill, the Democrats said the unemployment rate would not exceed 8 percent.

More than 44 percent of those without jobs are long-term unemployed--that's a record. Plenty of other Americans are underemployed.

There are 15 million Americans who are out of work. If you don't know one of them, then you don't know many people.

Of those 162,000 new jobs, one-third of them are temporary positions, such as census jobs.
