Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), who until last year was a little-known congressman, is considering a run for governor. It was Stupak who insisted on the anti-abortion amendment to the House health care bill.
If he runs, that presents another opportunity for a Republican pick up in the House of Representatives. True, Stupak's sprawling district, which encompasses the entire Upper Peninsula and the upper third of the Lower Peninsula, tends to vote Democratic. But it is a socially conservative region.
Stupak lines in Menominee, on the U.P. If does become governor, he'll be only the second "Yooper" to lead Michigan. The Upper Peninsula comprises one-third of the Great Lake State, but only three percent of its population.
In regards to last week's victory in Massachusetts by Republican Scott Brown, Stupak called it "a wake up call."
