Rep. Halvorson has no clear position on Gitmo North

Rep. Debbie Halvorson (D-Crete) is another member of the Illinois Democratic delegation who has yet to let her constituents know where she stands on Gitmo North.

Adam Kinzinger is hoping to unseat Halvorson, a freshman who previously was state Senate Majority Leader while Rod Blagojevich was governor.

From Kinzinger's web site:

On October 1, Halvorson voted to keep Guantanamo Bay open

On October 15, Halvorson essentially voted to close down Guantanamo Bay and allow its detainees to be transferred to the United States

This week's position: TBD

BOURBONNAIS, IL – Adam Kinzinger, Republican candidate for U.S. Congress and a member of the Air National Guard, called on Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson (IL-11) to end her silence and join other members of the Illinois Congressional delegation, including Democrat Melissa Bean (IL-8), in opposing the transfer of 215 Guantanamo Bay prisoners to Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois. To date, Congresswoman Halvorson has no comment since the announcement of Senator Durbin and Governor Quinn’s prisoner relocation plan.

"How bad is our economic outlook in Illinois when our leaders resort to importing terrorist prisoners in the name of economic development," said Kinzinger. "The security concern this creates is far too great to risk the safety of our citizens. We do not need to make Illinois a potential target for radical Islamic elements. It is time for Debbie Halvorson to finally show some political independence by opposing her party's latest misguided attempts to create jobs."

On October 1, 2009, Halvorson was one of only 88 Democrats in Congress who voted to keep Guantanamo Bay open and strip language from the Homeland Security Appropriations bill allowing terrorists to come to the United States (Roll Call 746).

On October 15, 2009, Halvorson voted against a measure that sought to prevent the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States for prosecution or incarceration (Roll Call 783). By opposing efforts to keep terrorists in Cuba, Halvorson essentially voted to close down Guantanamo Bay and allow its detainees to be transferred to the United States.

"Just as she has done on so many other matters, the congresswoman's actions have her on both sides of the issue," stated Kinzinger. "It is long past due for her to let us know where she stands. If history is any judge, she will side with party loyalty over the people."

According to a survey of 1,781 likely Illinois voters conducted Monday night, less than one-third of Illinois voters support a plan to move terrorists from Gitmo to Thomson, Illinois while 57 percent call it a "bad idea." Sixty percent of women and 58 percent of independents oppose the plan. Even Democrats narrowly oppose the plan, 44.5 percent to 43 percent.

The 11th District covers all or portions of the Bureau, Grundy, Kankakee, La Salle, Livingston, McLean, Will and Woodford counties
