Two days ago I wrote about Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour's idea to cut costs my merging some of its state universities. It's a brilliant idea, but my guess is that educrats and alumni will successfully defend their turf.
Over in Nebraska, two University of Nebraska-Kearney professors have suggested that the Cornhusker State consolidate many of its counties, going from 93 to 28. When Nebraska's counties were organized, giving residents the ability to travel from home to a county seat and back riding a horse was the guiding principle in marking county lines.
This one might take root. Nebraska is unique among states, it has a unicameral, non-partisan legislature. It's not afraid to experiment.
The San Francisco Chronicle's Wyatt Buchanan asks if California needs a lieutenant governor? "No" is my answer, and that goes for my state, Illinois, as well.
Illinois doesn't need a comptroller and a treasurer--merge those offices.
Some good can come out of a recession.
