The shallow shoals off of the coast of what is now Evanston, Illinois caused the sinking of the Lady Elgin in 1860, over three hundred people died, the greatest loss of life on the Great Lakes.
A lighthouse was suggested to minimize this dangerous part of Lake Michigan, and in 1873--the Civil War delayed things--the Grosse Point Lighthouse was commissioned by federal government.
The lighthouse was automated in 1934 and it currently serves as a guide to the numerous Chicago North Shore pleasure boaters.
Grosse Point Light House was named a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in 1999.
