Rollback of Cook County corruption tax falls short again

For most of my purchases, I pay a 10 percent sales tax--the highest in the nation. Yesterday Cook County board members failed by one vote to cut the county portion of the sales tax--which is widely mocked as the "corruption tax."

State law requires a super majority--80 percent--to override a Cook County Board president's veto. Democrats, who control state government, need to change that law, which was put in place to placate Cook County farmers.

There aren't many farms left in Cook.

As for that board president, he is Todd Stroger, someone then-Senator Obama called "a good progressive Democrat" who will "lead us into a new era of Cook County government."

Here's a statement on the corruption tax, from the new chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, Pat Brady:

The era of Rod Blagojevich, Todd Stroger, and Democrats' efforts to tax people out of this state continues and is further proof that Illinois is in desperate need of a leadership change from top to bottom.
