Sen. Jim Webb opposes Gitmo detainee transfers to US

Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), a former Secretary of Navy, has essentially backed off of his support of the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention center. Just four months ago Webb was in line with President Obama's position of closing Gitmo by early 2010.

Not anymore, as the Richmond Times-Dispatch informs us:

"We spent hundreds of millions of dollars building an appropriate facility with all security precautions at Guantanamo to try these cases," Webb said.

"I do not believe they should be tried in the United States."

He added: "We should at the right time close Guantanamo, but I don't think that it should be closed in terms of transferring people here."

Republican lawmakers, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said yesterday that they expect Obama to extend his deadline for closing the prison as he finds it difficult to relocate the suspected terrorists held there.

Virginia has been discussed, along with Colorado and Kansas, as possible destinations for at least some of the Gitmo terrorists.
