A small North Dakota town with a rich Icelandic heritage is getting help from that country to build its community center.
Iceland is donating $75,000 for the community center in Mountain, a northeastern North Dakota community of about 125 people.
Mountain officials told Iceland Prime Minister Geir Haarde about the $1.3 million community center project when he came to the town last year for the 108th annual August the Deuce Icelandic Celebration. It commemorates the beginning of Iceland’s journey to independence from Denmark.
Iceland’s finance minister and ambassador to the United States also attended last year’s event.
