(Photo) Mourning cloak butterfly

The mourning cloak butterfly has a huge range--from the North American arctic to central Mexico. And it can be found throughout Europe, as well as in Siberia and Japan.

This one I found at Fort Sheridan--just south of Lake Forest, Illinois. The mourning cloak has a long lifespan for a butterfly--up to ten months.

I didn't have my camera with me that day--so I snapped this pic with my Android cell phone.
