I found a rare treat in the restored prairie at Miami Woods in Morton Grove during my afternoon run--a common buckeye butterfly.
Despite its name, they are not that common in northern Illinois. They are migrants from the south--arriving in the late summer. In the fall the next generation flies back. The range of this butterfly is from southern Canada all the way to northern South America.
