Indiana Senate race: Richard Mourdock addresses BlogCon 2011

There is no US Senate race in Illinois in 2012. A race I'll be keeping a close eye on is in Indiana. Because the Hoosier State's second-largest population center is Northwest Indiana, which is served by the Chicago media market, I usually hear a few radio commercials for Indiana candidates close to Election Day. The Hoosier State's treasurer, Richard Mourdock, is challenging Sen. Dick Lugar in the Republican primary. Lugar, who has served in the upper chamber for 34 years, has been called President Obama's favorite Republican in the US Senate.

After Nebraska senatorial candidate Don Stenberg spoke to the bloggers, Mourdock took his turn. He said he wasn't sure what to expect from the bloggers, but told us, "What I walked out of that [conference] room with--was a sense of optimism and encouragement."

A professional geologist, Mourdock said, "I have studied history for more than 35 years," which he connected back to the audience members, declaring them to be "21st century Thomas Paines."

Mourdock also expressed frustration with the current supercommitte deficit-reduction negotiations. "The 1.2 trillion dollars that they are fighting to eliminate over the next ten years," Mourdock told us, "isn't even as large as this year's deficit."

Later, Mourdock invoked the memory of a Republican born on my side of the border, Ronald Reagan.
