She overcame substance abuse and then founded the Betty Ford Center, perhaps the worlds best-known treatment center for addiction. She also brought attention to the problem of breast cancer. Discussion of it was considered embarrassing in the 1970s.
Her husband, former President Gerald R. Ford, died in 2007, also at 93.
After leaving the White House, the Fords split their time between Colorado and southern California.
