Betty Ford passes away at 93

Interstate 70 west of Beaver Creek, Colorado
Former First Lady Betty Ford, who was born in Chicago 93 years ago, passed away this evening, CNN is reporting.

She overcame substance abuse and then founded the Betty Ford Center, perhaps the worlds best-known treatment center for addiction. She also brought attention to the problem of breast cancer. Discussion of it was considered embarrassing in the 1970s.

Her husband, former President Gerald R. Ford, died in 2007, also at 93.

After leaving the White House, the Fords split their time between Colorado and southern California.

Pajamas Media's Tatler blog has a moving tribute to this great woman.

Rest in peace.
